We keep hearing that communication is the key to a successful lifestyle experience. What does that actually look like in practice?

Communication in the lifestyle is about more than just "talking about your feelings." Here's what it looks like day-to-day:

Before events:

  • "What are you hoping to get out of tonight?"
  • "What are our boundaries for this specific event?"
  • "What's our signal if one of us wants to leave?"

During events:

  • Regular check-ins: a squeeze of the hand, a whispered "how are you feeling?"
  • Being present with each other even when flirting with others
  • Immediate communication if a boundary is being tested

After events (the debrief):

  • "What did you enjoy?"
  • "Was there anything that made you uncomfortable?"
  • "Would you do anything differently next time?"
  • "How do you feel about us right now?"

Ongoing:

  • Weekly relationship check-ins (not just about the lifestyle)
  • Revisiting boundaries regularly — they evolve
  • Expressing gratitude for your partner's openness

The couples who crash and burn in the lifestyle are the ones who skip these conversations. The couples who thrive are the ones who over-communicate. There's no such thing as too much communication in ENM.
